The front row in 1988's Indianapolis 500 was swept by Team Penske, with Rick Mears on pole, Danny Sullivan second, and Al Unser, Sr. in third. Mears went on to win his third Indy 500 in this race after Sullivan crashed while leading after a front wing failure.

These were such fun builds to do. I used aftermarket decals and fuel buckeyes from Indycals.net in addition to aftermarket wheel covers for the Sullivan and Unser cars from a friend over at indycarmodeling.proboards.com -- I opted to not use the wheel covers on Mears's car since he only used them on his initial stint and switched to open wheels for the remainder of the race. I did use Alclad chrome for a nice look though!

I built the Sullivan car first, and then decided "eh, why not?" and built the other two cars together. You can see the quality difference as I learned from my mistakes on the Sullivan car.

It wouldn't be a proper representation of the Captain's cars without all the Goodyears being at 12 o'clock! Nice work!

Super nice builds! I have Mear's car to build and will use your pics as a guide.

Thanks! Make sure to get a set of decals from indycals.net instead of using the kit decals -- they are much easier to work with and look better. Also get some tire decals from them instead of trying to paint on the raised lettering. You're better off sanding the lettering off the tires and just using the decals. (I also used one of the fuel buckeyes that Indycals used to sell, but it looks like those are not available anymore.) FYI for the chrome bits, I stripped the chrome plating off and used Alclad to get a more realistic look. Also here are a ton of reference pics I collected: https://imgur.com/gallery/dvWILXy
