This is (arguably) one of Slixx’s more challenging decal schemes.
I purchased the sheet during my travels through the USA, back in 1997.
Believe it or not, by around ’98 or ’99, I was well on the way with building this model.
But my first attempt hit a snag after I painted the black, yellow & dayglo colours and applied the flame “outline” decals.
I decided to spray Tamiya TS-13 Clear over the whole lot, to seal everything, ready for further decal work. Unfortunately, the clear coat turned to “tortoise-shell” as it dried – cracks in the finish all over it!
Not to be deterred, I got out my Micromesh cloths and sanded out all the cracks – still managing to preserve the paint and flame design.
I let this coat dry for some months before trying again with the TS-13……. I should’ve known better!
At first it looked great; but as the clear hardened it cracked into a tortoiseshell finish once again!!
In frustration, I threw the body back into the kit box and continued building the chassis and engine.
Some years later, I took out another Monte Carlo body and set to work again (with a fresh sheet of decals).
BTW, the kit body I was using needed a slab-side conversion on each attempt. I used Evergreen/Plastruct angle section and putty to achieve this.
I primed, masked, painted and clear-coated all over again. By now it was probably about 2011 or 2012 – I don’t really remember.
After that, the body sat for years, while I continued with other (more immediately gratifying) model projects.
A few years back I finally decided to give it another try. I put on the flame outlines and sprayed on a coat of 2K clear (not TS-13 this time!).
Thankfully, this did not crack up and so my enthusiasm for the project was more-or-less restored.
Finally, 22 years later, after sweating on a lot more detailing and decaling, I got it to what you see now.
I’m quite pleased, as I could have given up and let this scheme beat me. Glad I got there in the end, despite my early troubles.
I hope you guys like it.

Hey there you are, nice way to show off the Aussie fighting spirit. Great job and certainly well worth the perseverance. One you do not see built often.

Cheers Mate! You've been an inspiration to me for quite a long time!
Now that this car has finally left the "shelf of doom", I'm feeling fired up to hit a few more NASCAR projects. But I don't want to get ahead of myself...….. Rolling Eyes Wink

I'm glad you stuck with it. I am in the process of restoring some ,if not all of my old builds. It's definitely worth it. The models have been stored and boxed up do to hurricanes moving etc. They are all getting restored now. Some of my kit builds were lost but most I still have . So never get rid of any kit. That's a great save model you made.
