These were taken at Bristol in '79. Teams in the '70s for the most part were more creative with sheet metal than model kit producers have reproduced.

You're absolutely right about that Bill. I was looking through some reference photo's last week and ran across a black(I think) Nascar Olds that looked like an IMSA piece!

Heated and hammered over a leather bag of lead shot.
The '81 cars that were built over cut down big cars had even more creatively flared fenders. |

Yea -- some of the early 110" wb Cup cars had IMSA - Style fender flares, except they were not bolt - ons. One advantage was that the 110" cars had to have the bodies stretched a few inches; most teams did this by cutting across the top of the front fender wheel opening and adding both a 2 to 3 inch splice and the fender flare at the same time.
Later on when the teams started building new narrower 110" chassis, the body man's job became easier. Rumor had it that NASCAR would not legalize the Ford Fairmont Futura as a Cup car due to the short wheelbase and really small front fenders. The Chevy Malibu was frowned upon for the same reason, though several teams were allowed to run it.
A close look at the above photos also shows Richard Childress' #3 car has a red McCreary tire decal !!! |
