Bobby Allison 1982 Daytona 500 Winner Minus Rear Bumper
For the benefit of those who haven't ever heard the story behind BA's rear bumper controversy at the 1982 Daytona 500, here is the story of what happened. (According to Bobby.) Just as the cars were going out for the final practice, one of the Nascar officials, Joe Gazaway, told Bobby he was not being allowed to go out for practice until he moved his bumper. Joe said it was 1/4" out of place. Bobby argued that he passed nascar inspection and should be allowed to go out. Joe said no and that was final. Bobby and his crew removed the bumper and welded it back in accordance to Joe's satisfaction. However, Bobby missed the final practice. The next day in the 500, during the early stages of the race the bumper suddenly flew off. Bobby claimed that Cale Yarborough's drafting caused it to come off. Bobby went on to win the race but many people claim that, without the rear bumper, Bobby was much faster. Bobby said that without the rear bumper, it actually made the car slower and that the car was just that fast. One can only guess what was true! Great story!
KIT: Monogram
PAINT: Tamiya TS-26 Pure White. Interior Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black with Testor's Semi-Gloss clear. All metal pieces were painted using Testor's Model Master Metallizers.
DECALS: Powerslide.
BUILD NOTES: Right out of the box except I added exhaust dumps made using K&S aluminum tubing. Added Detail Master harnesses and buckles. Made all the rear fascia panel behind missing bumper using Evergreen sheet and painted with Metallizer Stainless Steel. Studied several YouTube videos and photos of this race to make sure the rear area was accurate and it looked like the real thing.
The real thing:

Really enjoy building the Monogram Buick Regal kit. I wanted to finish this kit before this year's Daytona 500. I started on this build not long after the first of the year. Everything went well and finished just ahead of my goal. I still think this one of the best nascar kits ever produced. Thanks for looking!

I LOVE it! What a unique build. That missing bumper and panel, just kills me! _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

This is a hoot! It's the kind of racing lore I enjoy seeing represented in scale. I love it. Thank you for sharing.

Another outstanding build Bobby! That is probably the best monogram Buick I've ever seen and as far as that bumper falling off unintentionally, yeah right! The way NASCAR had the teams mount the bumpers in those days, they were like a parachute under the car! With or without a bumper, BA and the digard team had them covered that year. Who got whacked by the flying bumper? _________________ "And on the 8th day God created the Hemi!" |

Great build as always. Love the way you present each project. The paint, decal and modification details all laid out up front followed by quality pictures. |

Great job! (as usual) but I really like how you've got the front hunkered down and the stance in general. I'm no expert on the Mono Buicks and MC s but I have noticed that getting the final stance with the right attitude on both ends can require some real finessing. You nailed it (as usual:)

That's another super clean build. I love that generation of stock cars. I read in Bobbys autobiography, DiGard still owes him money from that race. And they cleaned Donnies clock financially in the seventies. And folks may recall, DW along with his father in law and Junior bought him out of his contract with DiGard. Where there's that much smoke, there's usually fire. _________________ life is hard, it's harder when you're stupid. John Wayne |
