This one won't start for about 2 weeks. I should have the kit by then.
I already have the decals and also some images of a build I believe
from this site many years ago. I have been planning this for at least
6 to 8 years, maybe longer. I am still gathering reference material,
I will check around for roll bar, cages and wheels. I think SMH
use to have a lot of good aftermarket stuff. I want to get either the 57
Fireball Ford or the Petty 84 Grand Prix done before I start. I already
have half a dozen other models going.---John

Think George might have been referring to a couple of "enhancements "
the Petty's "may or may not" have done to that particular car:)

The car was moved forward, the front fenders wedged and the chassis nearly completely covered in sheet metal. Never heard about an acid dip or what that's supposed to do for the car.
If you are replicating the black or white topped car (I'm assuming black) keep in mind, the black was textured paint, not vinyl. I don't know if the white was textured or not, I've heard argument both ways. The white was used in July as an attempt to keep the car cooler inside.
If you need any real tech advice that you just can't get here (rare.. I know) just call the Petty museum and ask for Elizabeth. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." "Details man, I need details!!" |

acid dip to reduce the weight of the body panels. It has long been argued/known that the reason the front of the roof peeled up on this car was due to acid dipping/thinning it. A lot of people have thought that it was the vinyl roof peeling but as you stated, the roof wasn't vinyl but rather textured paint. A good clue is that you wouldn't try to reattach a vinyl roof with a 3# hammer as Richard got out and attempted to do:)

John | Very interesting. the "official" story I got was that a bad weld had broken on that corner. Not so sure about Richard at the time, but I guarantee LEE would have spotted a bad weld and would never have allowed the car on the track like that. _________________ "Dude, it's not Camelot... it's only a model." JW, you do great work but you might find yourself a little bit frustrated with this kit. I would recommend getting my hands on a AMT 70 Super Bee model and using the entire roof, a pillars and cowl spliced into the Road Runner body. It's not really as big a job as you think, anybody who has had this kit knows what I'm talkin about. The rest of the body isn't too bad, but the complete lack of windshield and rear window moldings is a major problem. _________________ "And on the 8th day God created the Hemi!" |

thanks john- the problem there is the birds need to be white for the daytona car because the roof was black. if you look close to the picture above you can just make them out. also i don;t recall seeing the birds used on any other car that had a blue roof, i may be wrong on that though.
