If you use an airbrush, there are a few alternative products which work even better than metalizers. If you need a spray can, then I am afraid I do not know of a suitable alternative.

You can probably do this as long as the paint surface is smooth. It can still be flat or satin without a lot of texture to the paint. You may need to use a lot of decal solvent, I do this with aircraf ...

The Thunderbird chassis also does not have the seams through the firewall like the GM kit does. This is why I really like the Thunderbird kit.

I've done it both ways and never used a jig, but Ilike the idea. Luckily I've not ran into any issues so far.

I like to assemble the roll cage using the chassis as a jig, but not glue it to the chassis. After the glue is dry, and I clean up all the mold lines, seams, I paint it as a unit.

The only thing I can add is that the airbrush will require an throurgh cleaning aftwards. The metallic particles can take a lot of work to completly remove. silver will typically cover pretty easily.
